Today's featured dessert is not a new offering; Dessert Club Chickalicious' Pumpkin Dough'Ssant ($5) has been available since summer. And although it technically falls into the category of a Cronut imitator, it manages to distinguish itself in at least two key areas. One, it's baked not fried. And two, all eight flavors are (usually) available every day.
The Dough'Ssant is about three great texture experiences: baked laminated dough, vanilla pastry cream, and a thick ring of flavored glaze on top. The laminated dough layers are still quite heavy even though they're not deep fried (there's still a lot of butter in there!), but Chikialicious strikes just the right balance of dough and pastry cream so each bite has a bit of both. The same smooth, flavorful vanilla cream goes into all of the Dough'Ssants.
The glaze on top isn't really a glaze at all—it's a massive layer of pumpkin pie frosting. There's a different form of frosting on each Dough'Ssant, but this pumpkin frosting replicates the flavor and texture of a real pie—complete with graham cracker crumbs on top.
Beyond pumpkin pie, the Dough'Ssant is available in the following flavors: Caramel, Chocolate, Oreo Cookie, Meyer Lemon, French Vanilla, Dutch Apple Pie and Crème Brulee.
